It's Finally Here!

It is hard to believe that KubeCon + CloudNativeCon EU is already next week. It seems like only yesterday we were in Austin launching Kubernetes clusters with Google home, learning how Kubernetes is helping make sure our favorite shows are available during prime time, and eating delicious Texas BBQ all along the way. So what is in store for this years event?

What we are looking forward to at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon EU

For starters, KubeCon EU 2018 will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, which in itself is awesome (more on that later). The event itself kicks off Wednesday May 2 2018, at the Bella Center. The word on the street is attendance will match and potentially surpass last December’s KubeCon, which resulted in over 4000 attendees! The Kubernetes community continues to amaze us and we are ever grateful to be a part of it.

This year’s schedule is jam packed with interesting talks.

Kubernetes Enterprise Panel

This panel will bring together stakeholders from enterprise IT and open source cloud vendors to discuss the role of open source container technologies in their cloud strategies. Panelists will recount challenges and pitfalls faced in deploying containers in production environments, highlight gaps before containers are fully "enterprise ready", and demonstrate best practices. Panelists will offer their views on the near future of containers as an enabler of the enterprise cloud.

CERN will describe their early experiences relying on Kubernetes federations to expand the available capacity to external clouds, while still offering a single entry point to our users - using GKE, AKS, Amazon and the Oracle cloud. CERN will cover some issues they had in some of the clouds (mainly networking) and how they solved them. They will show how they integrated their main batch system, and how workloads running on external resources access the corresponding datasets.

Lightning Talk: Home Automation with Kubernetes

In the pursuit of building a reliable smart home, we will investigate ways to make the open source automation platform "home-assistant" highly available by applying Kubernetes to a not quite standard problem. Some might call it over-engineering, others might call it thorough engineering. In any case, by the end of this talk, we will have explored a more exotic use case for Kubernetes.

We are also excited to check out these events going on outside of the normal hours:

Here is the complete schedule for the upcoming event. I only mentioned a few of the talks but there is pretty much something for everything Kubernetes related.

Some other thing’s we’re excited about:

The Dogs

Copenhagen is considered by some to be the hotdog capital of the world, and we’re excited to try these long delicious dogs. Copenhagen is home to over 4000 pølsevogn (hot dog stands) and while we won’t be able to make it to all of them, here are a few of the most popular ones.

DØP

John’s Hotdog Deli

Pølsekompagniet

Hygge /hue-guh/ is a Danish term for when you experience, with friends or alone, wherever you are, a charming and cosy moment. It doesn’t have to be anything special or unique, instead it only requires a conscious appreciation of the moment. It is considered by many to be a defining feature of Danish culture, and we look forward to embracing this throughout the week.

The Containership team will be in town on Tuesday to get things set up and in between sessions will be holding down the fort at booth SU-C16 in the exhibitor hall. We will have our usual ‘almost famous’ magnetic koozies up for grabs, live demos, and good ol’ Kubernetes conversation waiting for you.
